Scouting Report for Spencer Fano

Spencer Fano is right tackle prospect whose elite movement skills inform every aspect of his game and make him one of the best run blockers I've seen in recent years.

Fano's best characteristic is his unreal movement skills. He has good pad level, balance, and foot quickness to go with upper body power that makes him a formidable downhill run blocker. Fano has a nasty streak as well, which, combined with his versatility, makes him a weapon executing wide/inside zone concepts and power concepts, and doing so through the whistle. Fano's 2025 film isn't quite as nasty as his 2024 film, but his ability to win in every facet of the run game is still obvious. There isn't much else to say about him in the run game; you can expect him to be a plug-and-play people mover in a variety of NFL offenses.

As a pass blocker, Fano's athleticism is once again his calling card. Speed rushers struggle mightily to win his outside shoulder; Fano has excellent foot speed and bend to guide them beyond their arc to the QB. While Fano is seldom, if ever, beaten outside by speed, he's slightly more susceptible to inside counter moves, though his recovery athleticism and initial mirror ability are still top-notch. Fano spams the best flash technique I've ever seen; his right hand is remarkably strong and is his go-to technique for neutralizing speed. He rarely loses the initial contact exchange when blocking rushers who rely on speed and/or finesse to win, and he has the mirror ability and reactive athleticism to stick with almost any counter that even the savviest finesse rushers could deploy.

While there has been speculation about Fano's arm length, the only reliable measurement I could find is from the 2023 All-American Bowl, where his arms measured in at a respectable 34 inches. We'll have to see what his arm length actually is in the spring, but regardless of his length, he doesn't always use it well. Fano struggles mightily to handle speed-to-power; his initial strike is often late, and his anchor disintegrates when powerful rushes reach his chest. You'll notice my low-end comp for Fano is Jason Spriggs--a monstrous athlete whose lack of anchor and technique when handling speed-to-power spelled doom for his NFL career. Fano has an All-Pro ceiling, but if dominant power rushers make him a turnstile in pass protection, it could get very ugly very quickly. That said, most of my concern regarding Fano's faculties vs. power rushers stems from his 2024 film, upon which his 2025 film improved. The numbers reflect this, as his pressures allowed decreased from 14 to just 5. This goes back to Fano's recovery athleticism; he is remarkably quick to reset and re-engage with a rusher who initially beat him.

Fano's range, power, and versatility as a run blocker designate him as an obvious plug-and-play starter in a wide zone scheme that allows him to reach and overtake defenders, dominate on combo blocks, and work toward the second-level. I expect there will be a learning curve for him in pass protection, and his NFL success will largely be contingent upon his development as a pass blocker, because he's practically guaranteed to dominate in the run game. Penei Sewell is the comp if all goes perfectly, but a more realistic outcome may be something like if Charles Cross were a right tackle.
